How to select the best safe2dock inflatable fenders: Step by Step Guide

Selecting the ideal inflatable fenders for your dock, pontoon, pier or slip...

Correct selection of fenders for your dock is paramount. Consideration needs to include how far you want the fender from the boat, and how fare the boat will actually sit from the dockside once installed, as this distance needs to be transited to get into the boat.

With this in mind safe2dock offer fenders with widths of 200mm (8") / 300mm (12") / 350mm (14") and 450mm (18"). Many docks have a PVC edging of 50mm (2") which allows some of the fender to be recessed under this PVC edge.

Fender tube lengths also need to be considered, safe2dock offer three tube fenders and two drop-stitch fender options with 3 - 4 lengths.

safe2dock suggest a step & repeat distance of 200mm (8") between its fenders. This leaves space to inflate / deflate the fender and allow the pressure relief valve to operate as required (as fitted to Protector Deluxe & Premium fenders).

Fender diameters

When selecting safe2dock fenders which are designed to sit clear of the water, consider the distance from the water to the walkway of the dock, pier, slip. The 350mm (13.75") diameter fenders are designed for docks with water - dock height of 300mm (11.75") and the 450mm (17.75") at 400mm (15.75").

The safe2dock fenders have the side D-Rings offset from the centre by 15 -20% enabling them to sit proud (above) the walkway level.

Typical 12m (40') berth options:

Covering 80% +/- of the length. Highlighting boat placement in and out from the dockside.

Vessel positioning vs fender lengths & placement

Fenders covering 80% of the dock or pier length is ideal, closer to the port or starboard stern (side) are not that critical.

safe2dock Protector Series fenders are available in 1000 (39") 1500mm (59") 3000mm (118") 6000mm (236"), and the Slimline series in 1500mm (59") 3000mm (118") 6000mm (236") lengths enabling many of sizes to cover your dock or pier.

safe2dock fender installation

Step by step guide to install boat fender: lay flat, attach swivel shackles, screw saddles, flip, screw shackle pin, and inflate to 2 psi.

6 Simple Steps

  1. Lay the fender flat on the dock

Position it on its long side with D-rings facing the dock.

  2. Attach swivel shackles

Secure them to the D-rings for flexibility. Pin facing away from the fender.

  3. Screw in half saddles

Align with D-rings and screw half saddle 60-65mm from the edge.

  4. Flip the fender over

Remove the dust cap, twist and release the inflation valve.

  5. Attach a safety line to the fender

If the fender ends up in the water they become heavy

  6. Roll the fender over the side of the dock.

Once all the swivel shackles are in place.

    Remember the 3000mm (118") fenders only require 3 x D-rings with

two being spare - 3 x swivel shackles to secure, however the 6000mm

  7. (236") fenders requires 5 x swivel shackles to secure.

  8. Inflate to 4 psi (27.5kpa) – Use an electric or foot pump.

Obviously less air (softer), more air up to 4 psi firmer.
